Book Reviews:Uglies,Pretties,& Specials

Hey guys! :) Today I have 3 book reviews for you,the first three book of the Uglies series:Uglies,Pretties, and Specials. I'm currently reading the last book,Extras, and will do a review when I finish it. :)

Description:

Tally is about to turn sixteen-and she can't wait. Not for her license-for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellant ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away,Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world-and it isn't very pretty. The authorities ofter Tally the worst choice she could imagine: find her friend and turn her in,or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

My thoughts:

This was a remarkable plot with lots of action and adventure. I liked this book because it was very easy to follow, for the most part. It's so interesting and exciting. I feel like any age would like this book. Several of my friends have read it,both boys and girls. It's so fun finding out more about Tally's life and it's a real page turner.

Disclaimer-This review might have spoilers since it's a second book in a series. If you have not read this or Uglies yet,and you are planning to,I recommend you not read the description of this book.

Description:

Tally has finally become pretty. Now her looks are beyond perfect, her clothes are cool, her boyfriend is totally gorgeous, and she's completely popular. It's everything she's ever wanted.
But beneath all the fun-the nonstop parties, the high-tech luxury, the total freedom-is a nagging sense that something is very wrong. Something important. Then a message from Tally's ugly past arrives. Reading it,Tally remembers what's wrong with pretty life, and the fun stops cold.
Now she has to choose between fighting to forget what she knows and fighting for her life...

My thoughts:

Okay, first off all, there was some pretty freaking amazing quotes in this book. Just to name one: "Remember that the most beautiful things in life are the most useless." I could totally go on and on just about the beautiful writing in this book.
Personally,I liked Uglies a tad better than Pretties. Don't get me wrong,Pretties is a pretty amazing book. (See what I did there? ;) ) But I just like the plot of Uglies a bit better. One thing I do like better in this book is the characters. I LOVE the characters in Pretties. There's several more, and even the old ones you get to learn more about.
All in all, this book was great. It was new and fresh and fairly different from Uglies. It wasn't like Scott Westerfeld wrote the same story and sold it to us in a different book. Not like that at all. The ONLY thing that annoyed me about this book was the over-use of the word "bubbly". Not a big con,but kinda annoying.

Disclaimer-This review might have spoilers since it's a third book in a series. If you have not read this,Uglies,or Pretties, and you plan to,I recommend you not read the description of this book.

Description:

Tally thought they were a rumor, but now she's one of them. A Special. A superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid.
But maybe being perfectly programmed with strength and focus isn't better than anything she's ever known. Tally still has memories of something else.
But it's easy for her to tune that out-until she's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice:listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat,or carry out the mission she's programmed to complete. Either way,Tally's world will never be the same.

My thoughts:

Okay,I'm not gonna lie,the first two books of this series were totally AMAZING. This one, however, was not. Up until the very end, that is. I have to say my expectations were set pretty high for this book, considering how great the last two were. And it just was disappointing. I really hate to diss a book, but this one was not nearly as good. First of all,it took me ages to finish it. Not because I'm a slow reader or anything, but the story just seemed to drag on and on. I for one love when a book has great twists and surprises, but the twists in this book were almost annoying. Like Westerfeld was trying to trick the reader,if that makes sense. And that's not always a bad thing to trick the reader, but in this book I just did not enjoy that factor. Even though this book isn't very long,it just seemed long.
Personally,I was not a huge fan of the ending, but it was very intriguing and left me wanting more. I am currently reading Extras, and although it is quite good,I feel like it doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the series. I really hope Westerfeld doesn't just leave Tally's story hanging. So I feel like I've pretty much trashed this book. It wasn't just all out terrible, but let's just say if this were the first book in the series,I might not want to read the other books.  I probably would because the ending is quite interesting, but it just wasn't as good as the first two.

Have you read this series? :) What did you think of Specials?

:) Becca
